LG applies for ‘TrueμLED’, ‘QμLED’ and ‘MμLED’ trademarks

It is reported that LG plans to launch its first Micro LED TV at the Consumer Electronics Show (IFA 2018) in Berlin, Germany in 2018, and has applied for three trademarks related to Micro LED display technology.

This may not explain anything, but it is estimated that LG is ready to take a share with Samsung in the field of Micro LED TV. Business Korea reported in February this year that LG plans to launch "a larger MicroLED TV than Samsung The Wall TV" by September of this year.

MicroLED is also known as mLED or μLED, and "μ" stands for "Micro" (because "μ" is the 12th letter in the Greek alphabet). This week, FlatpanelsHD found that LG has applied for the “TrueμLED”, “QμLED” and “MμLED” trademarks to EUIPO (European Intellectual Property Office). These applications were submitted graphically and are currently being reviewed by the Trademark Office.

LG has classified trademarks such as "TV LED display" and "TV receiver", as well as other completely unrelated categories. Previously, LG had applied for the trademarks 'XμLED', ‘SμLED’ and ‘XLμLED’.

Although LG is still working on the production of OLED TVs, MicroLED display technology is gradually beginning to replace OLED technology. Like OLEDs, MicroLEDs are self-luminous display technologies that emit light at every pixel. The difference with OLEDs is that MicroLEDs are based on inorganic materials. One of the challenges that MicroLED currently faces is making the pixel size small enough to accommodate a typical TV size display panel.

LG rival Samsung plans to launch the 146-inch The Wall Micro LED TV in August this year. Sony is also developing displays based on similar technologies. In 2012, Sony showed off a 55-inch prototype TV called "Crystal LED," but it was never available.
